When a wood fire burns it exhausts gases (smoke), as these gases are formed of tar droplets which accumulate to the chimney walls. When the tar droplets cool they form what is known as to us as creosote. Creosote appears in many forms it can be dry and soft easily removed soot which can have a higher ignition point than the sticky hard glazed creosote which is very difficult to remove and often requires the use of chemicals. When creosote becomes ignited it can burn in excess of 2000 deg Fahrenheit and is known as a flue fire. Having a flue fire like this can either do no damage to a home or cause a house fire and do serious damage. Cleaning your chimney is really important, and should be done by chimney sweep professional so you can know what exactly what is happening inside of your chimney.  Oregon also recently has passed a new law regarding your wood stove and the pollution that it puts into the environment.
